Agreeing with Andy Rooney

Andy Rooney a few weeks ago said something on 60 Minutes I am now agreeing with more and more as the days go on. The gist of it was, that the use of the word “troops” in regards to individual solider is incorrect. A troop is a group of soldiers. So the plural “The troops are moving in” can be correct, but saying “Five US troops were injured in….” is misleading. How many solider in each of those troops were injured?

What really is happening is a change in American English language. Is this a good change or not?
