Natural Hazards Observer
This report Natural Hazards Observer came out last November, and describes the challenges everyone in New Orleans and Louisiana are facing now. Their estimation of 40 to 60 thousand dead fortunately was off (those numbers were assuming a direct hit). The total cost of this will be amazing. It could very well be that New Orleans will not be back to it’s prestorm size for a very long time. I do hope I’m being pessimistic, but it is hard to tell
In the mean time, Caltech Girl takes Hollywood to task for not raising support for the people on the Gulf. Have you made your donation yet?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m as sad to hear about the destruction as much as the next person. But I’m still trying to get past the question of why anyone would settle on land below sea level, protected by not very tall levies, in an area where massive hurricanes have been known to pass through. Doesn’t it seem like a bad idea to anyone else?

only as much as living in an area where the earth shakes every few years.
Or the forests burn. Or the ice freezes on the electrical lines, downing the power polls.
To live is to risk. We can plan and prepare the best we can, but in the end, we can not avoid the risk.
